Dedicated
Hosting
"Dedicated
hosting permits individuals and business to lease pre-configured,
state-of-the-art equipment and connectivity from a hosting service
provider. Instead of simply sharing server space on a virtual
server, dedicated hosting gives you the opportunity to lease an
entire server for your own exclusive use"
The
server hardware, routing equipment, network connectivity etc is
monitored and maintained by the hosting company and the server
software + applications are maintained by you.
But
why have your own server?
Why not share a webserver with other customers? Surely there is a
cost advantage in sharing a webserver
instead of opting for the more expensive dedicated server option?
Well,
a dedicated server will be more secure, more private, other things
being equal it will be faster, and it is better suited to complex
applications.
The
options the host will give you probably include a fully manager
dedicated server or a dedicated server that is self managed. And
there may be several options in-between. Some of the services that
the host may manage for you are a firewall, spam protection etc.
Generally
the server is provided by the hosting company themselves though in
some cases (colocation) you may be able to provide your own
server. The advantage in having a dedicated server provided by the
hosting company is of course that they do the maintenance and
repairs.
Payment
for a dedicated server is usually done on a monthly plan rather
than an outright purchase of the server. But various hosts operate
differently and you may get discounts for paying a year in advance
and/or financing the purchase of the server.
